Some lights come out a colour nobody expects.

Deep in the woods, inside an oak that nobody sees, lives a whole small world called Hush Hollow. Every Wickling who lives there has a flame - a small light that grows right above their head - and every flame is a different colour.

Tonight is Pim's first Flame Day. Tamble's flame blooms orange. Bix's glows honey-gold. Rose's flutters pink.

Then Pim's flame comes up, and it is blue. Cool as a river stone. Not warm like the others. Not like anything the hollow has ever seen.

Pim tries everything to change it. Nothing works.

But nobody asks him to change it, either. Nana Fern says nothing at all. Tamble simply scoots over and pats the moss beside him. And later, out at the edge of Moon Pond, Pim finds out what a blue light is actually for - not to shine brighter, but to make things clear.

A quiet, warm read-aloud for ages 4 to 8, for the child who is the only one of something in the room. The feeling arrives on its own: nobody in this story needs fixing, and no one is told what to think.
