The Libri GmbH The Giant Killer

From the coal mines of Shamokin, Pennsylvania, to the biggest stage in Major League Baseball, Harry Coveleskie's journey is one of the Deadball Era's most remarkable-and overlooked-stories.In this meticulously researched biography, Harry Deitz chronicles the life of the left-handed pitcher known as the "Giant Killer." As a rookie with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1908, Coveleskie stunned John McGraw's powerhouse New York Giants by pitching three complete-game victories in just five days, derailing their National League pennant hopes and earning his legendary nickname.Just a year later, struggling with control problems and relentless bench taunting, Coveleskie found himself back in the minor leagues. Rather than giving up, he rebuilt his career and returned to the majors with the Detroit Tigers, where he won at least 21 games in three consecutive seasons. Although the heavy workload eventually ruined his arm, his 2.34 earned run average over five seasons with Detroit remains the best in Tigers history.More than just a baseball biography, The Giant Killer reveals the man beyond the nickname. Overshadowed by his Hall of Fame brother, Stan Coveleski, Harry has often been misunderstood. Drawing on newspaper archives, historical records, family stories, and extensive research, Deitz uncovers the full story of a determined pitcher who overcame extraordinary odds. The third installment in Harry Deitz's acclaimed series on Deadball Era ballplayers from Shamokin, Pennsylvania, The Giant Killer is an essential read for baseball historians, Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies fans, and anyone who appreciates stories of perseverance and America's pastime.
