In many German speaking cities, the local Kunstverein established permanent collections similar to those of the Kunstmuseum, which derive mainly from earlier feudal times. The Museum Abteiberg is a municipal museum for contemporary art in the German city Mönchengladbach. The museum became famous for its avant-garde exhibitions curated by director Johannes Cladders and its museum architecture, designed by Austrian architect Hans Hollein, as a highpoint of postmodern design.
