African art and literature make it possible to discuss socio-political change in Africa across many borders, and thus represent a great enrichment of society. African literature played a major role in political liberation from the colonial powers. But what role does art play? A look at the contribution of African painting to the contemporary debate shows how important diverse cultural approaches are to current processes of self-understanding and how they thereby contribute to social and political change.
