After his wife's death and his mentor's disappearance near Kamakhya, historian Advik Sharma inherits a leaning house on Scindia Ghat. Inside a locked room he finds a fresh yantra drawn in ash, a bowl of sour water, and smoke that hangs at knee-height though no fire burns.

The yantra belongs to Dhumavati - the seventh Mahavidya, the Widow Goddess. Grey as ash, riding a horseless chariot, her flag a crow, her hand a winnowing basket. She is not worshipped inside the village, but outside it. In the cremation ground. In the place where nothing grows. She is hunger, quarrel, loneliness, and the void that remains when every blessing has left.

With a haunted Bhairavi named Kamala as his only guide, Advik is drawn through the hidden shrines of Chousathi, the forests of Mehrauli, and a breathing Himalayan cave called Dhumadwar - each step a more dangerous ritual, each ritual a thinning of the self.
