Description du produit

This is a history of the ships that carried both silver and people, the raiders who became landholders, and the men who ended their careers as Christian kings paying rent to bishops. It separates what the evidence supports from what later centuries added: the horned helmet that came from an 1876 opera costume, the sea king Ragnar who may never have existed as one person, and the killing known as the blood eagle, which remains a genuinely disputed reading of a single obscure verse. It follows the Scandinavian expansion from its first recorded raid to the point where trade routes, coinage and church taxes turned improvised camps into kingdoms, and it gives the trade in enslaved people its full weight rather than a passing mention, tracing prices, routes and the slow economic end of the practice across three centuries. It follows the ships up the rivers of Francia and down the rivers of what is now Russia, the founding of Dublin as a market town, the settlement of an island with no king, and the voyages that reached North America five centuries before Columbus and did not stay. It follows the silver that arrived from Baghdad and the silver that stopped arriving, the assemblies that grew into parliaments, and the treaty that handed land in France to men whose fathers had been raiding it.By the twelfth century, the raiding had ended and the kingdoms remained: Christian, taxed, and no longer separable from the rest of Europe.Lucian Kentmere draws on chronicles, law codes, archaeology and three generations of Scandinavian scholarship to tell this as a history of expansion, not a history of a people who happened to fight.
