Despite historians in recent years emphasizing the importance of the Singing in Schools movement in the creation and development of modern music in China, I would argue that it was the teaching of instrumental music that has proved to be far more important. This book begins to examine in detail which resources were used and what teaching strategies were employed. It includes the first translation of the earliest Trumpet tutor written in Chinese. It includes the first modern music editions of both Zhang ZhiDong and Yuan Shikai's Military Music books.
