Independently Published Les ateliers de Santa Teresa - Le son que le bois gardait Livre de poche

In the workshop where she restores guitars, cavaquinhos, and mandolins, Lígia Valença works to make every instrument respond again. After certain repairs, however, the first ordinary performance releases a former sound for a few seconds: a chord, an exercise, a mistake hat anyone can hear and no one can explain.

A recording captures the phenomenon but cannot prove who played or when. For Lígia, the question is less supernatural than professional: what does a repair restore, what does it erase, and who has the right to decide?

When Caio Belmonte's guitar returns with a new defect, the phrase emerging from the wood reveals the choice the instrument held before Lígia replaced its original bridge without renewing his authorization. The repair works. So does the sound. And they do not say the same thing.

The Sound the Wood Kept is a quietly magical novella about craft, listening, consent, and the difference between making something work and choosing for someone else.
