Hyperviscosity syndrome (HVS) is a pathological condition characterized by increased blood viscosity resulting from abnormalities in blood components, including red blood cells, platelets, and plasma proteins. This condition impairs blood flow and microcirculation, leading to various clinical complications that may affect individuals regardless of age or gender. Aspirin is widely recognized for its antithrombotic activity through irreversible inhibition of cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1), thereby suppressing thromboxane A¿ synthesis and reducing platelet aggregation. The present study aimed to evaluate the clinical and biochemical characteristics of patients with hyperviscosity syndrome and to investigate the potential of deuterium-substituted aspirin as an alternative to conventional aspirin for improving anticoagulant efficacy and reducing blood viscosity. The study consisted of two complementary parts: a clinical biochemical investigation and a biophysical experimental study. The clinical study was conducted at Al-Imamian Al-Kadhimiyin (Peace Be Upon Them) City Hospital between January and April 2024.
